Dear Constituent ,

Yesterday, Glasgow City Council revealed its spending plan for the coming year. Money has been earmarked for repairing thousands of potholes and ten new nurture classes, designed to provide additional support to children who have the greatest difficulty in coping with the pressures of school. The school supplies budget will increase by 10% and the estate budget by £500,000, which will allow Glasgow to meet its targets for improving the quality of education in the city.

A task made considerably more difficult when the Scottish Government gave Glasgow the smallest increase in funding of any council in Scotland, a point I made known to John Swinney in Parliament, yesterday. The direct impact of which means that several community centres face closure. I believe community centres play a pivotal role in creating strong communities and I will do everything possible to try and prevent there closure.

New Campus Glasgow

New Campus Glasgow is a visionary project to bring together Glasgow’s 3 city centre colleges to deliver world class learning on a shared campus. Altogether, city centre colleges house around 2,000 staff and 50,000 students - a quarter of them full-time. New Campus Glasgow is planning a supercampus that will develop the existing, thriving learning quarter in the city. It’s certainly the UK’s biggest, most ambitious educational building project and possibly the biggest in the sector in Europe. It is being funded by the Scottish Funding Council. partnership with the 3 colleges: Central College Metropolitan and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.

Currently the City Council along with the design team, Atkins, are engaging with key stakeholders including local Community Councils. To date they have met with Hutchesontown Community Council, Anderston/City Area Committee, and Pollockshields and Southside CPP and on Tuesday with the Merchant City Community Council

The planning application for this project is scheduled for June of this year with consultation continuing up until this time. I would urge as many constituents as possible to take the time to view the proposals and take part in the consultation process

Last week I tabled one motions before Parliament:

S3M-05601 Pauline McNeill (Glasgow Kelvin) (Lab):

That the Parliament warmly congratulates Habib Malik, Scotland area manager of Islamic Relief and a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee, as the winner of the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award 2010; recognises his personal commitment as an aid worker who has dedicated his life to assisting those in need in many places around the world, including the Swat region of Pakistan, Kashmir, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan,
Niger, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Gaza, Pakistan and recently Haiti, and further recognises the good work of Islamic Relief across the world.
