Dear Constituent

This week is Alcohol Awareness Week and I visited the Scottish Co-operative store in Great Western Road to learn more about their responsible alcohol sales policies.

I would urge people in Glasgow Kelvin and across Scotland to make positive lifestyle choices in order to enable them to drink more responsibly. We all have a role to play in encouraging people to make sensible, positive choices about their alcohol consumption.

I had the opportunity at General Question Time to ask the Scottish Government what support it will give to Glasgow City Council to improve its recycling rates. The city needs Government assistance to improve recycling facilities at its Polamdie plant and it is important that all Glasgow MSPs work to support Glasgow in its efforts and to ensure that this support is provided by the Government.

This week has also seen Trade Union Week at Parliament, with events such as Unions in School aiming to raise awareness of the work of the trade union movement.

The success of the Music of Black Origin Awards (MOBOs), held at the SECC on 30th September 2009 was great news for Glasgow with coverage expected to reach 350 million people around the world. Glasgow has an unrivalled reputation for hosting such occasions and I have lodged a motion in Parliament calling on the organisers of events such as the BRIT Awards to consider this example of hosting events outside London.

I am delighted at the plans for the Lewis Chessmen which are on display at the British Museum in London are to undertake a mobile exhibition tour of Scotland. It is completely normal that museum exhibits are shared around various museums and this shows how museum professionals can work together while nationalist politicians try and play politics with artefacts.

I have had a long-standing interest in the issue of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and I submitted a written contribution to the Public Petitions Committee when it was considering a Petition on HMOs.

I also attended the recent Merchant City Festival.

Thanks for stopping by.
